What is Recreation Therapy?

Recreation and activity-based interventions led by a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) to address your particular needs can greatly improve your physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual wellness. Done one-on-one or in group settings, recreational therapy works to heal the whole person by allowing you to move and think in different ways. Each therapeutic recreation session will look different, tailored to your needs, goals and interests. At Saratoga Recreation Therapy, we work with children, adolescents and adults of all ages and abilities.

Who Can Benefit from Recreation Therapy?

Recreation therapy is for everyone, but can be especially beneficial for individuals who:

  • are seeking motivation and empowerment;
  • neurodivergent needs;
  • struggle with anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges;
  • have varied physical and cognitive abilities;
  • emotional and behavioral concerns;
  • are feeling lost during major life transitions;
  • or individuals with substance use disorder.

Each therapeutic recreation session will look different, tailored to your needs. At Saratoga Recreation Therapy, we work with children and adults of all ages.

Why Try Recreation Therapy?

Physical Fitness

Nontraditional approaches to movement can improve physical fitness for people living with physical disabilities, injury, and anyone who doesn’t like typical exercise models.

Mental Wellness

Movement and creative recreation allows the body to release endorphins, or natural “feel good” hormones. This alleviates symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions.

Socio-emotional Wellbeing

Erika Likar, CTRS

For almost 15 years, I have been passionately providing recreational therapy services to child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations including those with:

  • Varied physical and cognitive abilities
  • Neurodivergent needs
  • Substance abuse disorders
  • Emotional and behavioral concerns

I find joy in empowering people to become the truest, happiest versions of themselves at every stage of life.

It is an honor to embark on this journey with you and/or your family! I look forward to discovering and embracing renewed strengths and watching you thrive as you bravely explore, insightfully heal, and improve your quality of life!

When I'm not with clients, you can usually find me at the gym or connecting with nature to enhance my own life every day! I currently live in Saratoga County with my wife, our 2 sons and my dog! I enjoy being outside in nature, traveling, being active and spending time with my friends and family.
